In a groundbreaking move towards sustainability, MGM Resorts International has solidified its commitment to renewable energy by entering into a 25-year power purchase agreement with Escape Solar. This agreement marks a significant step forward in MGM Resorts’ efforts to procure 100% renewable electricity in North America by 2030.
The Escape Solar + Storage project, set to be constructed in Lincoln County, Nevada, is at the heart of this deal. Anticipated to commence operations in early 2026, this project will be instrumental in doubling MGM Resorts’ access to clean solar electricity, generating power equivalent to the annual needs of over 28,000 typical American households.
At present, MGM Resorts relies on solar power to meet 90% of its daytime energy requirements at 11 properties along the famed Las Vegas Strip. With this new agreement in place, the company’s coverage will extend to 100% of these properties’ daytime needs, while also introducing renewable power for nighttime applications such as exterior lighting.
Bill Hornbuckle, CEO and President of MGM Resorts, expressed his enthusiasm for the promising development, stating, “This agreement is the next step toward the achievement of our climate goals. We have our eyes on meeting our science-based targets and goal of sourcing 100% of our electricity in North America from renewable sources by 2030.” He added, “As we continue the journey toward greater sustainability, we remain dedicated to finding new ways to reduce our carbon footprint, conserve resources and inspire others to join in building a more sustainable world for generations to come.”
Jill Daniel, CEO of Estuary Power, lauded the collaboration, remarking, “Estuary is delighted to contribute to MGM Resorts’ industry-leading renewable energy objectives by supplying solar energy and battery capacity from our Escape Solar project.” She highlighted the positive environmental impact of the partnership, noting, “MGM Resorts’ purchase of renewable energy from Escape will reduce carbon emissions by nearly 250,000 metric tons annually. In addition, Escape will generate substantial economic benefits for Lincoln County, Nevada as the first utility-scale solar project in the county and will create over 250 well-paying construction jobs.”
The agreement with Escape Solar is a testament to MGM Resorts’ continued dedication to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. With each step forward, the company is not only reducing its own carbon footprint but also setting an example for the industry and inspiring others to embrace renewable energy solutions.
